When filmmaker Sharon Shattuck was in middle school, her father came out as a transgender woman and asked to be called Trisha. These changes not only added to Sharon and her sister’s adolescent embarrassment, but also placed a great strain on Sharon’s parents’ relationship. As a straight woman who had fallen in love with a man, could Sharon’s mom, Marcia, adjust to being married to a woman? But Marcia and Trisha stayed together and continued to raise Sharon and her sister as a family.
