Our Brand Is Crisis

Thematic Perfect and Otherwise: Documenting American Politics Curated by R.J. Cutler

This remarkable documentary follows American political strategists from the firm Greenberg Carville Shrum in 2002 as they travel south with advice on marketing tactics for Gonzalo Sánchez de Lozada’s presidential re-election campaign in Bolivia. In Sánchez de Lozada’s first term from 1993–97, he instituted a series of social, economic, and governmental reforms that many Bolivians rejected. Now, bearing in mind the unpopularity of his policies, “Goni” counts on media strategies and smear campaigns to sway the minds of voters. In a countdown to the 2003 election, Our Brand Is Crisis follows the experts in action as they coach and council the Sánchez de Lozada team, holding “think sessions” and focus groups, dissecting ads, and distilling data. Filmmaker Rachel Boynton explores these complicated systems of influence and documents the protests of the Bolivian people, examining the ethical fallout of strategies that successfully compel a country to elect a candidate, and the tragic consequences that ensue.  ST
