Primary

Thematic Perfect and Otherwise: Documenting American Politics Curated by R.J. Cutler

Robert Drew’s groundbreaking film follows the 1960 Wisconsin primary as John F. Kennedy and Hubert Humphrey go head-to-head in a battle for the Democratic Party presidential nomination. With unprecedented access, the story is told from the inside, giving us a candidate’s view of the process—we look directly over Kennedy’s shoulder out into the crowd. The cinéma vérité footage, which pulls viewers into the action, was shot with new mobile cameras that captured image and sound simultaneously. Cinematographers record each candidate for a week, following the hopefuls as they connect with Wisconsin primary voters and wait for polls to come in. The energy and excitement is palpable, and while the film treats both candidates fairly, Kennedy’s charisma overwhelms the footage, a foretelling of history to come.  ST
