Shorts: Past + Future
NEW DOCS
Recollected pasts and imagined futures converge in this program, which features portraits of three dissimilar artists as they reflect on their careers and their prospects. In Heavy Fog Tonight, director Nathan Reich introduces us to Conrad Milster, who has served as the chief engineer of a steam plant for nearly 50 years and now faces retirement and life away from his mechanical muse. In The Many Sad Fates of Mr. Toledano, directed by Joshua Seftel, we meet Phil Toledano–a photographer and worrywart–as he obsesses over his mortality and stages elaborate shoots to enact the myriad dark ways he might age, deteriorate, and die. Finally, in The 100 Years Show, directed by Alison Klayman, the fierce and funny 99-year-old artist Carmen Herrera relishes her status as the “hot new thing” on the art scene, recalls her youth in Cuba, and recounts her long-fought battle for creative recognition.
