F for Fake

Thematic Stories About Stories Curated by Amir Bar-Lev

Orson Welles achieved instant celebrity with one of the greatest tricks in radio history, the notorious “The War of the Worlds.” In his hat and cape Welles pulls back the curtain in F for Fake to reveal to the audience how easy it is to blur the lines between fact and fiction as he splices film in the editing room. Welles then takes the viewer on a whiplash-filled cinematic journey through the life of famed art forger Elmyr de Hory and his biographer Clifford Irving, no stranger to fakery himself. It’s fitting that Welles’s last directorial effort is an examination of the relationship between art and truth, but beware, the self-proclaimed charlatan does not leave you without having played a few of his own tricks.  JM
