Security

Guests will be asked to walk through an Evolv Scanning System ahead of entering the Durham Convention Center and Carolina Theatre. The Evolv Scanning System is a touchless, non-invasive scanner designed to detect suspicious items while allowing for a smooth and efficient entry experience. If you’ve attended a show at the Carolina Theatre recently, you may be familiar with this technology. 

To help with the flow of foot traffic, Evolv scanners will be positioned outside of Festival Headquarters at the Durham Convention Center and in front of the Carolina Theatre. Once inside either main entrance, guests may move freely between the box office, pass registration, cinemas, and seating lines without needing to be scanned multiple times. If an attendee exits the Carolina Theatre or Durham Convention Center, they will need to walk through the Evolv Scanning System again at the time of reentry. 

Permitted Items

Metal water bottles, umbrellas, eyeglass cases, laptops, and binders are permitted, but are likely to trigger the Evolve Scanning System. We recommend removing these items into trays before passing through the scanners. A designated table will be available for easier item handling. Water bottles must be emptied before entry. Please note that the Carolina Theatre does not allow any outside alcohol, beverages, or food. 

Backpacks and tote bags are permitted to accommodate guests staying on-site throughout the day; all bags are subject to search. 

Medical Devices and Mobility Aids

Guests with medical devices or mobility aids including pacemakers, wheelchairs, and walkers are welcome. Please follow your doctor’s recommendations. If you prefer not to pass through the security scanner, a manual search can be provided instead. 

Prohibited Items

Prohibited items include: 

• Firearms or weapons of any kind 

• Professional photography/videography equipment (unless pre-approved)
