From January 23 to April 8, 2020, during the COVID-19 outbreak, 11 million people in Wuhan, China, endured 76 days of lockdown, a decision that the World Health Organization called “unprecedented in public health history.” The film lays bare the chaotic mechanics of overwhelmed hospitals, immediately thrusting the viewer into the epicenter of the pandemic. The grief is insurmountable—a wailing woman unable to touch her deceased father, a box filled with cellphones of the dead, still buzzing with notifications from worried loved ones. Despite the unrelenting scenes of heartbreak, the film is grounded by the medical staff who create moments of connection with one another and their patients. The healthcare workers are covered head-to-toe in PPE, making them unrecognizable as individuals—yet 76 Days highlights their collective resilience and hope even in the midst of apocalyptic tragedy.  KL
