A Bronx Morning
Thematic Hybrid: A New Film Form Curated by Mary Lea Bandy
Jay Leyda takes the viewer around The Bronx, his black-and-white cinematography as perky as René Clair’s of Paris, as gently touching as a witty poet’s verse. In 1929 Leyda came to NYC to assist Ralph Steiner, became close to the leading photographers of the day, made this film in 1931, and used it to win a scholarship to Eisenstein’s Moscow film school in 1933. The film’s fragmentary structure blends documentary and experimental filmmaking with ease and tenderness, using the motion of the elevated train and motifs captured with a camera eye for the accidental delight.
