A Fox Under a Pink Moon

NEW DOCS

A Fox Under a Pink Moon follows 16-year-old Soraya, an Afghan woman living in Iran, and her repeated attempts to escape the country. The documentary is culled from hours of her own cell phone footage and video conversations with filmmaker Mehrdad Oskouei. Their collaboration sparks confessional moments where Soraya describes abuse at the hands of her husband, longing for her mother in Europe, and the dangers of relying on smugglers to cross borders. The footage that she shares with Oskouei frames her daily routines, working with her husband to clean apartments and making art that helps her to transcend and process her circumstances: Soraya’s camera looks on as she creates remarkable sculptures, drawings, and paintings. The film beautifully animates her inspired illustrations, foregrounding recurring figures—a willowy clown floats in a watercolor sea, an auburn fox enters the frame as Soraya speaks to the camera. Scenes of creative resilience stand in sharp contrast to harrowing on-the-ground footage of her efforts to leave in this powerful personal document. ST
