Elahe Esmaili’s short film takes place during a trip home to Mashhad, Iran, where she joins her family for Ramadan and to assist with a house move. The London-based filmmaker’s visit is marked by a quiet yet resolute gesture of resistance: she refuses to wear the mandatory hijab. She explains her commitment to supporting the Woman, Life, Freedom movement—a response to the 2022 death of Kurdish-Iranian woman Mahsa Amini, whose death sparked nationwide protests against Iran’s morality police. In one powerful scene, Esmaili engages and commiserates with other women in her family and community as they share their collective yearning for freedom, tempered by the weight of their fears and concerns. The film’s apparent simplicity masks a sophisticated perspective, with Esmaili carefully balancing her roles as filmmaker and subject as she fuses her deep love and respect for her family and friends with courageous, uncompromising act of rebellion.  PB
