A Once and Future Peace

NEW DOCS

Blending animation and live-action footage, Emmy award–winning director and Full Frame alum Eric Daniel Metzger follows the story of “Andy,” a Mexican American teenager facing four felony charges, as he tries to complete a “peacemaking” pilot program. Similar programs, such as the one we see implemented in a Canadian court by Judge Barry Stuart and Harold Gatensby (Dahka T’lingit), a member of the T’lingit tribe, subvert the colonial structure of juvenile courts by using the Indigenous tradition of peacemaking circles. This form of restorative justice seeks to resolve conflicts between individuals and their community instead of doling out retributive punishment, an approach that has been slowly growing in popularity since Howard Zehr’s 1990 book, Changing Lenses: A New Focus for Crime and Justice.  BD
