A Stranger Quest

NEW DOCS
How do we navigate the possible obsolescence of our life’s work? This philosophical question is at the core of A Stranger Quest, which investigates the life of map collector David Rumsey through the eyes of an artificially intelligent guide. Since 1980, David has amassed an unparalleled collection of maps (primarily ones published before 1920), which are now housed in the David Rumsey Map Center at Stanford University. His enthusiasm for maps is infectious, highlighting how they combine science, art, and history all in one. For the last thirty years, he has worked to share his love of maps by digitizing them, especially for what he lovingly calls his poem: a gallery of his maps showcased in the virtual world of Second life. As David reflects on his life, he wonders what will become of his poem after he is gone, especially given the fleeting nature of technology and, perhaps, human existence. BD
