A Touch of Greatness

NEW DOCS

A fifth grader protests, “I’m not that sick! I have to go to school!” His classmates march with picket signs that read: “Vote for Shakespeare!” and “Go Shaw!” To what can one attribute this surprising devotion to learning? In 1999, former students of Albert Cullum’s fifth grade class, held in Rye, New York, from 1956 to 1966, gather to reflect on this remarkable teacher’s influence on their lives. The film is not only a tribute to a great teacher but also a celebration of the extraordinary capacity of children to learn, create and succeed when inspired and challenged. In a time of national concern over “leaving no child behind,” the lessons of Albert Cullum are more vital than ever.  AT
