A View from Above

NEW DOCS

Director Dylan Werkman’s immersive, kaleidoscopic collage covers a lot of ground (and sky) in a short time. Metaphors of ascendance and inspiration are depicted in wide-ranging scenes joined by the wonders of human spirit: An astronaut’s singular perspective, a couple’s life-altering experience, an athlete’s desire, and a lone diver’s dare share the screen as their unique yet collective mettle is tested. The evocative filmic essay complements its moody poetic tenor with unusually adept technique: split-screens amplify meaning, sound bridges invite curiosity, and deft cross-cutting expresses a dynamism that suits the film’s ambitious theme. Intimate and vibrant, the film distills an expansive and thoughtful proposition—life on earth—to a palette of primary emotions and experiences.  TM
