aka MR. CHOW

Mr. Chow wears a blue suit with a tie and pocket square and oversized round glasses. He is looking to the right of the camera and smiling.

Tribute Jean Tsien

At 85 years old, Michael Chow has lived many different lives. Born Zhou Yinghua and raised in an artistic lineage stemming from the Beijing Opera, he reinvented himself in London as Mr. Chow and built an empire of restaurants that elevated authentic Chinese cuisine to fine dining. More recently, he’s reinvented himself again as M, a painter whose theatrical roots are evident in his signature paint-splattered canvases. His persona has always been intimately tied to performance, but in aka MR. CHOW, Michael Chow speaks directly into the camera with candid introspection. His coddled, upper-class upbringing was upturned during the Chinese Revolution, and his family and culture stripped from him. When reflecting on his life, he often speaks in terms of cinema, describing hypothetical soundtracks and moments that fade to black. His story reflects the tenuous nature of displacement, oscillating between the traumas and tribulations of immigration and the endless possibilities of the American dream.  KL
