Albert’s Winter

NEW DOCS

Andreas Koefoed, winner of the 2009 Full Frame Best Short for 12 Notes Down, offers another transcendent meditation on the dislocations that occur when a child must inevitably grapple with very adult themes. In a series of vignettes eight-year-old Albert romps in the snow, auditions for a school for gifted musicians, and finally watches his mother remove her wig, revealing her cancer. In each moment, there seems to be room for joy and sadness, fear and accomplishment, discussion and silence. Ultimately, as the dull ache of family illness is tenderly contrasted with the natural exuberance of youth, this film is less about what happens and more about the subtle way experiences unfold.  ST
