Apocalypse in the Tropics

Building on her acclaimed film The Edge of Democracy, Petra Costa returns with a thriller-paced exposé of Brazil’s descent into far-right extremism. Through a searing chronicle of the Bolsonaro era—marked by anti-Indigenous discrimination, rampant deforestation, restrictive abortion bans, homophobic policies, and COVID denialism—Costa unveils stark parallels to the current global surge of authoritarianism, particularly within the United States. A crucial thread is the explosive growth of evangelicalism, which has risen from 5 to 30 percent in Brazil over the past four decades, and its undeniable role in fueling the far-right’s ascendancy. Costa’s remarkable access allows us a disquietingly close look at the architects of this upheaval, particularly the televangelist Silas Malafaia, as well as key figures on the other side of the divide, including former and current President Lula da Silva, a liberal whose leadership has also been marked by controversy, including a term in prison. Ultimately, the film serves as an urgent warning—a cinematic reflection on democracy’s fragility. PB
