Backyard

Career Award Ross McElwee

During the summer before his second year at film school, Ross McElwee conceived of two separate films. The first was to document his younger brother’s transition to medical school to follow in their father’s footsteps. The second was meant to focus on the family’s yardkeeper and beekeeper, Clyde Cathy. That the two stories converge into a single film reveals something dear about the way the lives of the McElwee family intertwine with those of their employees. The quotidian interactions between a father and his sons, black employees with their white employers, and other family friends as they take place in the limited space of a Southern family’s backyard speaks volumes about the filmmaker’s sense of life in a place he calls home.
