Bessie: A Portrait of Bessie Schonberg
NEW DOCS
Bessie Schonberg was an icon of the performing arts, a true and good woman and a powerful force in the American dance movement in the twentieth century. Born in 1906 to a cultured German family, Schonberg resettled in America and became a teacher of some of the greatest American dancers. This film allows one to experience Bessie Schonberg at first hand, teaching and guiding young choreographers, glimpsing the excitement of shaping a new movement, and understanding how space and dancers interact to create an ephemeral but enduring art. This is a remarkable portrait of a strong woman who knew how to nurture and admonish, and how to draw out the best in her pupils.
