Beyond Selinunte

NEW DOCS

While framed around a nostalgic return visit by Professor Vincenzo Tusa, who first saw Selinunte in 1949 and later supervised the archaeological work, this film also spins off in other orbits. By virtue of its location, Sicily has been at the center of human movement for centuries. Examining the landscape through a broad range of visual and musical styles, this bold rhapsody leads one to consider how different cultures inhabit the same space over time, and how communal values are often at odds with personal interests. Selunite is an important archaeological site, yes, but nearby is a fishing village and a seaside resort. The passage of time is contemplated not only in the geologic scale of sea and stone, but in the human scale of lifetimes through the reminiscences of the aging Tusa and his friends.  TWH
