Blue Sky. Dark Bread

NEW DOCS

The subject is a small wheat-farming community in Russia at harvest time, and the telling is in the details. Rich in impressions of daily rituals, this is a warm and caring portrait of a way of life. Shot on film and with a semi-sync soundtrack, it overflows with “analog warmth”—tape hiss and emulsion surface artifacts. Unlike similar looking “retro” efforts common these days, these technical elements are not forced, but honestly achieved. The overlapping and shifting of sound and image is simple, effective, and lovely. Although some fragments of conversation are overheard, this film is not subtitled, and it need not be.  TBW
