Breathing Lessons: The Life and Work of Mark O’Brien
Thematic A World Without Limits Curated by Leroy T. Walker and Nancy Buirski
Mark O’Brien, who was severely stricken with polio at a young age, believes disability to be a social problem, as it can happen to anyone. He sees two major myths dominating the mainstream perception of disabled people: first, that the disabled are useless, incapable of contributing, and, second, that the disabled can do anything, as long as they set their minds to it and are not lazy. O’Brien is a published poet and journalist. Although his body is disabled, his beautiful and moving poetry is evidence enough that his soul is not disabled whatsoever.
