Calling the Ghosts

NEW DOCS

“It left deep traces on her body and her soul.” This is the mother of Jadranka Cigeli, speaking of her daughter, one of the 36 women who underwent sadistic raping and beating by Serbian guards at the Omarska Detention Camp in Bosnia. This searing look at the abuses perpetrated against these women, mostly Muslim and many professionals, is rendered directly and gratuitously. Jadranka allows the filmmakers and viewers access to her inner hell, and it is clear that in doing so she is not only cleansing herself but helping mankind purge itself of its continued crimes against women. She organizes witnesses to speak out to the world and the force of these testimonies is carried by her to the International War Crimes Tribunal in The Hague. There, for the first time ever, rape is listed by international law as a crime.
