Carmen Meets Borat
NEW DOCS
At seventeen, Carmen is delightful and, according to her neighbors, already an old maid. She dreams of emigrating to Spain, whose romantic men are enticingly portrayed in the soap opera she watches each afternoon. Instead, she finds herself tending her parent’s shop at home in Glod, Romania, where life bumbles lazily along. Suddenly Sasha Baron Cohen rolls through town, paying the townspeople a paltry sum and then portraying them as backwards abortionists and thieves in his mockumentary Borat. This sets off a flurry of distrust and jealousy that turns the relaxed, jovial town on its head as its residents seek retribution from the Hollywood star with the help of a slick American lawyer. Carmen Meets Borat tells a captivating tale of real emotional depth, made richer by its subtle examination of the sometimes ethically complex relationship between filmmakers and their subjects. SB
