In 2008, William D. Caballero began making an autobiographical film, traveling to the trailer in Fayetteville, North Carolina, where he grew up and interviewing his mother, Milly, and his father, Chilly. Over a decade later, he revisits his footage, watching excerpts with his parents and reflecting on what has happened in the years that have passed—poignant conversations about their lives together reveal the devastating effects of chronic illness on the family and Milly’s steadfast commitment to her responsibilities as a caretaker. Caballero visually reimagines these intimate family dialogues through a stunning animated technique, threading the original recordings through scenes that feature impeccable three-dimensional models of the family home, his parents, and himself.
