Conjure Bearden

Invited

Tom Whiteside has carefully assembled archival footage shot by itinerant filmmaker H. Lee Waters in Kannapolis, Troy, and Chapel Hill from 1936 to 1941. A lively and affecting original score by Anthony Kelley adds a unique complexity to Waters’s images. Commissioned by the Nasher Museum of Art at Duke University, this film is a brief but lasting meditation on African American life in Romare Bearden’s South.  ST
