Rendered through original stop-motion animation, a moving phone call between a mother and her daughter Dani unfolds over the course of this short film, which grapples with having to share distressing news with a loved one. Intercutting between intricate depictions of Dani’s stable apartment environment and her perilous internal state, each minute of animation conveys the weight in their words. By turns tender and firm, their conversation evinces a deep connection despite the distance between them and the striking dissonance of a daughter communicating difficult information to her parent. Under the bleakest of circumstances, the matriarchal protector becomes the protected.  KR
