Deaf President Now!

In March 1988, “Deaf President Now!” was the rallying cry of Gallaudet’s student body when a hearing president was appointed over qualified Deaf candidates. In its 124-year history, and despite being the world’s first Deaf university, none of the presidents leading Gallaudet had ever been Deaf. The board of trustees, led by Jane Bassett Spilman, declared, “Deaf people are not ready to function in a hearing world.” The dissonance was resounding. For eight days, the university came to a complete stop as students barricaded the campus. Each subsequent day brought new highs and lows, and the central student leaders of the protests—Bridgetta Bourne-Firl, Jerry Covell, Greg Hlibok, and Tim Rarus—share the play-by-play, delving into the complexities of leading an entire movement. Directed by Nyle DiMarco (Deaf activist and Gallaudet alumnus) and Davis Guggenheim, Deaf President Now! crafts an immersive experience of student activism through its singular sound design and evocative visual language, bringing the Deaf perspective front and center.  KL
