Defending Our Daughters

NEW DOCS

A Pakistani father tries to sell his daughter in marriage to a man twice her age. Women are circumcised in Somalia. An elderly Bosnian woman is raped by neighborhood boys. Americans call these atrocities; the societies from which these acts emerge call them ancient traditions. They are, in fact, all violent acts committed against women, happening today, and fostered by their communities. Barbara Kopple takes a hard look at these and other abuses around the world, and at the women rights activists working to reform laws and gain equality for women. She is unsparing in this hard-hitting look at what is deemed acceptable in different customs.
