Different Moms
Thematic A World Without Limits Curated by Leroy T. Walker and Nancy Buirski
Following the cessation of policies forcing the sterilization of the intellectually disabled in the 1960’s, a new generation of intellectually disabled mothers and fathers emerged. Exploring the realities of these new types of families, these portraits reveal the struggles, the challenges, and the triumphs of everyday living. What emerges is an illustration of trials and tribulations similar and familiar to all people, not only the handicapped. The difficulties they face are often surmountable, if a system of support and assistance is in place.
