Dirty Business: ‘Clean Coal’ and the Battle for Our Energy Future

Kathleen Bryan Edwards Award for Human Rights - Honorable Mention 2010

NEW DOCS

As we flipped on the kitchen light this morning or plugged in our laptops, how many of us thought about coal nestled in the mountains of West Virginia? Rolling Stone reporter Jeff Goodell poses a similar question early on in Dirty Business and then expertly lays out exactly where our energy comes from, illuminating our country’s dependence on coal in a way that is more humbling than scolding. Images of mountaintop removal make you realize the cost of electricity bears little relation to the bill in your mailbox. The film demystifies the coal lobby’s promotion of “clean coal” and introduces us to innovators who are experimenting with renewable energy sources such as wind and solar power. Perhaps more than any other film you see at Full Frame, this one could change the way you live your daily life.  RYS
