Echo of You

NEW DOCS

What is life like after a lifelong partner is gone? In Echo of You, this question is explored through the lens of a group of elderly Danish men and women who have lost their significant other, either to death or dementia. Many of them can recall the first time they met their partner—the outfit they were wearing, the sound of their voice, their scent. Yet the film is surprisingly honest when it comes to the ups and downs of long-term partnership; some of the participants discuss infidelity and marriages of convenience. But retelling their love stories also seems to be a form of catharsis, allowing them space to reflect on and remember their partners. Interspersed with the interviews are lyrical and arresting moments when home movies or photographs from the past are projected onto the speakers in the present. Featuring both straight and gay couples, Echo of You is a poignant reminder that love once gone is not lost. BD
