Educating Peter
Thematic A World Without Limits Curated by Leroy T. Walker and Nancy Buirski
It’s Peter’s first day of third grade. He’s excited and scared, like 46 million other children on their way to the first day of a new school year. Yet Peter stands out, for he has Down Syndrome. Under statutes of Federal Law requiring intellectually disabled kids to be placed in the same classroom as the rest of the students, Peter begins public schooling in Blacksburg, Virginia. This film documents the adventure of Peter’s first year in public schools and it reveals the many human dilemmas at hand.
