Elaine Stritch at Liberty

Invited

Acclaimed documentarians Nick Doob, Chris Hegedus, and D A Pennebaker direct this enthralling portrait of Broadway legend Elaine Stritch. Combining the on-stage performance from her Tony Award-winning one-woman show with behind-the-scenes footage of Ms. Stritch as liberty in the world, the film chronicles the venerable performer’s tumultuous life. The film features several of her classic songs including, “The Ladies Who Lunch,” incorporating footage of Ms. Stritch from the infamous 1970 Pennebaker documentary, Original Cast Album-Company, about the making of the cast album of the musical. Stritch moves from her youth in Michigan through the loss of her husband and her struggles with alcohol. Her moving and tragic stories about the competitive world of big-time showbiz are peppered with colorful anecdotes about such venerable figures as Marlon Brando, Noel Coward and Ethel Merman. The film is an illustration not only of a life lived in the theater, but of a life fully-lived.
