Escape to Life: The Erika and Klaus Mann Story

NEW DOCS

Propelled by first-person narratives voiced by Vanessa and Corin Redgrave, the lives of siblings Erika and Klaus Mann (Thomas Mann’s openly gay children) appears charmed, privileged, and ultimately, doomed. In Berlin, Klaus and Erika, writer and actress respectively, are viscerally involved in the sexual and theatrical movements of the Roaring Twenties. They must leave the country in the face of the rise of Fascism and WWII. Their intense sibling relationship is challenged by the demands of exile in the United States, and by Klaus’s drug addiction. Interviews with family and friends, original screen performances by Erika Mann and reenactments based on Klaus Mann’s writings, all create a fascinating family drama during a pivotal period in history.
