Every Little Step
Invited
Every Little Step follows the casting of the 2006 revival of Michael Bennett’s A Chorus Line, one of the most beloved musicals of all time and itself a story about casting. With access to the actors and, more astonishingly, to the panel of judges that includes choreographer Baayork Lee and director Bob Avian, both veterans of the original production, the filmmakers allow us to listen in on the casting process. From the origins of the 1975 production, including excerpts from Bennett’s audiotapes documenting the confessionals of dancers on which he based his play, to the opening night of the revival, we see how the actors’ personalities shape the roles they inhabit. The film presents the hardships and joys of a life on Broadway, suggesting that perhaps the reason the play is so affecting is that its seventeen characters express self-doubts and dreams familiar to us all, on stage and off.
