Family Affair

NEW DOCS

Chico David Colvard was just a kid when he shot his sister in the leg. What he didn’t know was how that moment would upset a wicked balance in his house, exposing family secrets that would take years to unravel. Much later, as an adult, Colvard is shocked to discover that his sisters have seemingly forgiven the father who abused them as children, and sets out to understand how this is possible. His is an aching tale of sexual abuse, love, and family bonds that are not always easy to understand. Family members—the father who shows no remorse, the long-estranged mother, and the three indomitable sisters—speak with honesty and often relief as they reveal important pieces to the puzzle. Narrated by Colvard with power and restraint, the film is an unflinching examination of the damage a person can inflict upon others, but also a story of forgiveness and hope.  RYS
