February One

NEW DOCS

The story of four college students who, on February 1, 1960, began a sit-in at a Woolworth’s lunch counter in Greensboro is widely regarded as one of the pivotal moments in the civil rights movement. Reprinted in countless textbooks, documentaries, and museums, photographic images of “the Greensboro Four” waiting to be served at the “Whites Only” counter have become iconographic symbols of a turning point in American history. But what rarely gets told is how four idealistic college freshmen—Franklin McCain, David Richmond, Joseph McNeil, and Jibreel Khazan (Ezell Blair)—became friends and inspired one another to stage the sit-in, or how the burden of history has impacted their lives ever since. This touching film offers an unusually intimate portrait of four familiar strangers. TW
