Feels Good Man

NEW DOCS

How does a carefree comic-strip frog make the leap from bodybuilding meme to the Anti-Defamation League’s list of hate symbols? Artist Matt Furie never imagined the effect that posting his anthropomorphized amphibian Pepe to Myspace would have on the online populace, but in doing so he unwittingly coined a catchphrase and a character that would be co-opted by groups antithetical to the little green dude’s laid-back ethos. Director Arthur Jones has crafted much more than a man-behind-the-meme story: His film is a richly drawn case study (or de facto primer) in meme culture itself. Bringing together compelling interviews with academics, NEETs, 4channers, Donald Trump’s campaign data analyst, a Pepe cryptocurrency enthusiast, and Furie himself, Feels Good Man traces the trajectory of the collective power of a meme and how it can go terribly, terribly wrong. Vivid animations created by Furie, snips from media coverage, and excerpts from court testimony of Furie and conspiracy theorist Alex Jones (whose InfoWars website Furie sued) round out this engrossing film, effectively bringing all the feels to light.  WFM
