In 1996, host Heklina first mounted Trannyshack, an irreverent rock ’n’ roll drag show featuring subversive absurdist performances, a fierce soundtrack, and a transcendent spirit. The film recounts the history of Trannyshack, with performances from fabled theme nights such as the delirious “Cracked Out Divas,” and “Weapons of Ass Destruction,” not to mention the horror-show “Serial Killer Night.” The performers are funny, real, and moving, both in and out of drag. The film explores their desires and motivations. At times cathartic and hilarious—and always transgressive—there are no sacred cows in this show where creativity springs eternal.
