FOLKTALES

An individual looks toward a howling sled dog.

Finnmark, Norway, on the Russian border, is home to Pasvik Folk High School, where students can escape the modern world for a year in the wilderness. There, among wintry forests and foreboding tundra, the teenagers learn outdoor survival skills such as fire making, camping, and dogsledding, as well as life lessons in confidence, perseverance, and self-reliance. We follow new students Bjørn, Hege, and Romain as they initially struggle and strive, having replaced the known hazards of adolescence and social media with the unknown hazards of the wild. In their own unique ways, and with the inspiring fellowship of mentors (and Malamutes), the teens experience challenging and unpredictable adventures in the Arctic—and stirring transformations—as they prepare to return to the challenging and unpredictable adventures of impending adulthood.  TM
