Generation Exile

NEW DOCS

This highly imaginative rumination on the fragmented experience of human exile comes from a filmmaker who draws from every resource at his disposal to convey the psychological effects of displacement to the viewer. Using stories and perspectives not only from his own life and that of his family, Rodrigo Dorfman also draws on the experiences of four women with very different angles on displacement—a Latina artist, an Afro-Caribbean Whirling Dervish, a Taiwanese pianist, and an American entangled in the immoral acts of others who share her faith. He takes us with him on a whirlwind tour of the globe, and as one tale of pain and morality blurs into another, the film induces in the viewer a sense of vertigo, as if to mimic the disorientation and alienation of exile. Brilliantly strategic and rich, Generation Exile finds its way to a most poignant and inspiring conclusion.  AMK
