George Wallace: Settin’ the Woods on Fire
NEW DOCS
The ultimate political animal, George Wallace would’ve sold his soul in order to get elected Governor of Alabama, and, according to this enthralling film, he did just that. The man who propped himself up as the spokesman for the segregationist “movement” in the 1960’s began his political career as one of the most tolerant judges in the state. At times light and whimsical, this film records the complexities of an obsessed, professional politician who ultimately seeks the redemption of the people he ostracized, jeopardized and scapegoated. It is both a warning of what totalitarian demagoguery can reap, and what redemption and understanding may heal.
