Heavy Fog Tonight

NEW DOCS

New York’s oldest steam-driven power plant is located on the campus of the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. The steam plant’s chief engineer is Conrad Milster, and for nearly 50 years he has been the trusty operator, caretaker, and steward for the campus’s moody and dangerous behemoth; he is also an unconventional artist who creates mechanical installations that whistle and mist. A gifted mechanic and audiophile, Milster is facing retirement and life away from the literal and figurative pressures in the caverns of the power plant. Heavy Fog Tonight depicts an ardent and decidedly analog confluence of a man and machines, all seemingly built for another time. In an exquisitely photographed and tactile tableau, perseverance and preservation mix with music and memory, and at the precise moment that one era ends and another begins, Milster makes his mechanical muse sing.  TM
