Helen and the Bear

At 22 years old, free-spirited Helen Hooper knew she wanted a stable relationship and her independence, two things she didn’t think were incompatible. Helen soon met Pete McCloskey, 26 years her senior, a married California congressman—and the first person to publicly call for Nixon’s resignation. After being friends for a couple of years, Helen became Pete’s political aide. Three years later, Helen and Pete (whom she lovingly calls Bear) were married. Director Alix Blair’s gorgeously shot film captures an enduring and unconventional marriage on the precipice of its final chapter. With Bear’s health declining, Helen, now 65 years old, begins an earnest reflection on her path in life thus far and how she might go forward in her grief. Blair’s present-day footage, juxtaposed with old photos and home movies, highlights Helen and Bear’s endearing and ever-abiding affection and love for each other. Excerpts from Helen’s journal add more texture and underscore an achingly tangible loneliness that was present all along.  WM
