Hold Me Close

A person is lying against another's shoulder. Rainbow-colored light falls across them.

NEW DOCS

This achingly intimate and gorgeously filmed (in 16mm) short brings into focus a young couple very much in love. Tiana and Corinne share a glorious, light-filled apartment, a cat, and a seemingly easy domestic rapport. Through taped conversations—the two made recordings of themselves talking every day for weeks—we hear their dearest hope, of having a baby. They also share a desire to eclipse societal pressures and move together through the world safely as a Black and queer couple, confiding feelings of overwhelm and a fear of dying. Exceptional framing; carefully considered shadow, light, and color; emotive music, and a rich sound design are all attentively and precisely used to underscore and heighten the rise and fall of these deeply personal moments. We see a colorful constellation of purpose as Tiana and Corinne work to be and remain in the moment with each other.  WM
