I Was Born This Way
Invited
In 1977, singer Archbishop Carl Bean released a disco anthem so radical in its message of self-acceptance that its reverberations are still being felt. Born in Baltimore and drawn to the gospel churches of his youth, Bean’s singing career took him to New York and then Los Angeles, until his calling led him to found the Minority AIDS Project during the height of the AIDS epidemic. Directors Daniel Junge and Sam Pollard draw on in-depth interviews with Bean, along with archival footage and rotoscope animation, to highlight both his powerful convictions and outsized jubilance. With testimony from Lady Gaga, Billy Porter, Questlove, and Dionne Warwick, the film reveals a life defined by an unshakeable belief that “love is for everyone.” KL
