I Will Marry the Whole Village

NEW DOCS

Pekka, an accordion player, lives in a Serbian village where there is a surplus of unmarried men between the ages of 30 and 60. With wedding gigs few and far between, he is underemployed. And he yearns for a bride of his own. In the hopes of creating connubial bliss for himself and his friends, he conceives of a project where the elder bachelors will present video portraits of themselves to interested single women. And it’s a musical! As one song, sung by Pekka and a chorus in folk costume, proclaims, “I will marry [off everyone in] the whole village—even if I have to pay for it!” This quirky portrait of an incurable optimist and a cohort of unlikely bridegrooms will have you humming in solidarity with the lonelyhearts of the former Yugoslavia.  LB
