I’m Not Everything I Want to Be

A black-and-white image of a person holding a camera before a mirror

NEW DOCS

Before Libuše Jarcovjáková was known as the “Nan Goldin of Czechoslovakia,” she was a young woman trying to understand her place and purpose in the world when the Soviets invaded Prague in 1968. Seldom without a camera in her hands, Libuše documented herself every day for years. I’m Not Everything I Want to Be uses these black-and-white photographs alongside audio narration of her daily journal entries to capture her increasing alienation and isolation in the country she once called home. We observe her struggles to find her voice as an artist, her explorations of a Prague underground filled with queer artists like herself, and her travels abroad with hopes of redefining herself. Libuše’s vulnerability and honesty is heartrending, and highly relatable to anyone still questioning and searching for answers to who they really are.  BD
