In My Corner

Career Award Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg

Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg’s first collaboration takes us inside the world of the Bronxchester Boxing Club and the coaches and young athletes who hook and jab within its rings. Angel Alejandro was a troubled teenager on the streets of New York until Luis Camacho invited him into the sanctuary of his gym and changed his life. Now an adult, Angel works alongside Luis to redirect the lives of neighborhood kids, teaching them the same respect and discipline he learned from Luis. His most promising protégé is Joey Rios, an undeniably talented 15-year-old with trouble at home and an emerging social life that threaten to disrupt his training. Luis and Angel are determined to help him make it to the Junior Olympics, and the possibilities for a better life it offers, but Joey continues to stray. Meanwhile Angel’s energy shifts to a promising new young athlete, 13-year-old José Suarez, with distractions of his own. Will the trainers succeed in helping the boys reach their full potential, or at the very least stay out of trouble?  ST
